Just in time for Memorial Day weekend traffic tickets, New York drivers now have the option of completing a defensive driving course on the Internet. That’s great news for New Yorkers who are facing a possible driver license point suspension, as the course reduces up to four points on their driving record from tickets they have received within the past 18 months.

The state of New York has a PIRP (Point & Insurance Reduction Program), for the purposes of:

  1. Refreshing your driving knowledge
  2. Reducing points on your driving record
  3. Reducing insurance rates

In 2006, a provision in New York state law established the “IPIRP” program, which is a 5-year pilot that will enable New York drivers to take their accident prevention course on the web.  PIRP courses have traditionally been delivered in the classroom by private traffic schools. “You mean this isn’t the DMV?”

That’s a question we hear quite a bit at Driver Training Associates.  So why do people think that we’re the DMV?  It must be because we provide traffic school, driver education, and license reinstatement courses.  We’re not exactly sure why so many people assume that traffic schools and other similar programs are run by the state Department of Motor Vehicles, but hopefully this article will set the record straight on that subject.
