Madera County Traffic Ticket Procedure

The Madera County Superior Court lists the following steps as the typical procedure when a person receives a traffic citation.

  • The law enforcement officer writes a traffic citation (ticket) and presents it to the driver.
  • The ticket specifies whether attendance in court or another action is required of the driver and whether a fine amount must be paid.
  • A courtesy notice is sent to the driver from the court. This notice states the options available to the driver and the date the driver must appear in court (if applicable).
  • The courtesy notice also includes instructions should the driver choose to not contest the ticket and simply pay his or her fine.
  • The courtesy notice will indicate whether the defendant is eligible to attend traffic school (see "traffic school" section below).
  • If the driver (i.e. the defendant) decides to contest the ticket, he or she must pay the proposed fine. This money will be placed in trust. If the court convicts the driver on the traffic charges, this money is applied to his or her court ordered fine; otherwise (if the driver is acquitted), the court will return the money to the driver.
  • If the defendant does not pay a fine after he or she has been ordered to do so by the court, the defendant's case might be referred to the Franchise Tax Board for collection. If this happens, a civil fee of $300.00 will be assesssed.

Madera Traffic School Online

If you are a driver who has committed a moving violation in Madera County, your courtesy notice from the court will indicate whether or not you are permitted to go to California traffic school for ticket dismissal. If you ARE given this option, you will be required to pay the amount of the fine plus $69.00 (traffic school fee).

The $69.00 fee is paid to the court, not to the traffic school. An additional fee must be paid to the traffic school that you select for your online or classroom course. If you decide to go to Internet defensive driving school with Driver Training Associates, you will pay the traffic school fee shown at the top of this page.

After you finish your traffic school course online, you will receive a certificate of completion from our course provider, I Drive Safely®. You must turn this certificate in to the Madera Superior Court within 90 days. If you fail to do so, your conviction will be reported to DMV and the points will not be masked on your driving record. In many cases, this results in a higher insurance rate after a driver's auto insurance provider sees the points for the ticket.
