Driving in the presence of large vehicles such as buses, semi tractor trailers, and recreational vehicles (RV's) presents a challenge. Because of the physics that come into play when a large vehicle crashes into a smaller vehicle, drivers of smaller vehicles should take heed to keep their distance as much as possible. Far too often, drivers of cars, motorcycles, and light trucks blithely drive alongside these large vehicles, often traveling for miles in blind spots where their smaller vehicles are impossible to spot.
Several years ago, the "No-Zone" campaign was introduced to familiarize small vehicle drivers with the dangers of driving around trucks, buses, and other large vehicle types. Car drivers sometimes whip around a truck or bus and travel just in front of the larger vehicle, not realizing that those vehicles require more stopping distance. Driving in the front no-zone is dangerous and can lead to a rear-end collision. While most rear-end collisions do not result in serious injuries or fatalities, these consequences become more common in cases where a large vehicle rear-ends a smaller one.
Side and rear no-zones are dangerous because large vehicle operators cannot spot traffic around them with their mirrors. This has led to the placement of signs on trucks warning other drivers that "If you can't see me, I can't see you." Drafting, or driving in a truck's rear no-zone for better fuel economy, is also a dangerous practice, as it prevents the driver of the smaller vehicle from seeing traffic around him or her, and it makes his or her vehicle completely invisible to the driver of the truck.
For more information about no-zones and driving around large vehicles such as trucks and RV's, you can take a defensive driving course sponsored by DTA. We have studied numerous traffic scenarios and developed strategies to help you reduce your risk in situations such as crossing at intersections, passing, and driving in poor weather conditions.
